"Tell me what you eat, and I shall tell you what you are."

— Jean Anthelme Brillat-Savarin

Brillat-Savarin (1755–1826) was a French lawyer and politician who became one of history's most influential writers on gastronomy. His book The Physiology of Taste pioneered the idea that what we consume shapes our health, mood, and mind.

Two centuries later, his wisdom holds true. What we eat and drink matters—for our mental clarity, physical energy, and long-term wellbeing. In a world of mass production and shortcuts, our food and drink are increasingly filled with additives, preservatives, pesticides, and invisible contaminants we never asked for. Coffee is no exception—most commercial beans are treated with chemicals and stored in conditions that breed mycotoxins. This conviction guides everything we do. We source only 100% organic beans, roasted fresh to order—never sitting on warehouse shelves for months or years like commercial coffee, which requires preservatives and chemical treatments to remain shelf-stable. Our beans are pure, clean, and free from the mycotoxins and synthetic residues that have quietly infiltrated the modern food supply. Because for those of us who believe nothing comes before coffee, that coffee should never come with concessions. You deserve pure coffee. No compromises.

From Cherry to Cup

It started with frustration. Everywhere we went in the US, we couldn't find amazing coffee that didn't give us heartburn, acidity, and jitteriness. We visited beautiful cafés with passionate baristas, but the result was always the same—jitters, anxiety, stomach issues.

Good coffee shouldn't do that. In European cafés, we never had these problems (they have stricter food additive restrictions). So we asked: Why does coffee roasted here make us feel terrible?

The universe answered with a TED Talk—"What You Didn't Know About Coffee" by Asher Yaron. After many more TED talks, research, books, and roasting videos, we started roasting at home on the stove. Then we moved to the oven, and eventually upgraded to a small personal-sized roaster.

From the very first cup, we felt the difference. The jitteriness was gone. Brain fog lifted. Only 1-2 cups kept us going (no more 10 cups a day). No more acidity or heartburn. Mind active and alert.

After five years of perfecting our craft, we invested in a commercial-grade specialty small-batch roaster and launched Rittenhouse Coffee to share what we discovered.

Why "Rittenhouse"?

Rittenhouse Square is one of five original squares planned by William Penn in 1682, named after David Rittenhouse—astronomer, clockmaker, inventor, and first director of the U.S. Mint.

Philadelphia's most prestigious address for over two centuries—comparable to Central Park in New York or Hyde Park in London. Featured in films like Philadelphia (Tom Hanks), Trading Places (Eddie Murphy), Silver Linings Playbook, and M. Night Shyamalan's Servant.

There are many wonderful cafés around Rittenhouse Square—but none called Rittenhouse Coffee. Not in the neighborhood, not in the city, not in the country. We're proud to carry that name.
